About two weeks ago we tried the jello fiber optics experiment but it hardly worked. A week ago, I found another recipe to make it, and this is what we used:
Purpose: To investigate how fiber optics work by using gelatin and a laser pointer.

I love a good science magic trick and this one is really easy and cool to do.
I got this penny chemistry experiment from Anne Marie Helmenstein, Ph.D. at About.com:Chemistry. Her explanations follow the steps we used.
Materials:
20-30 dull pennies
1/4 cup vinegar (white or apple cider vinegar – both contain acetic acid)

Materials
Balloon
Small funnel
Baking soda
Vinegar
Small clean empty 20 oz plastic bottle
Method
Using the funnel, add 3 teaspoons of baking soda to the balloon.
Fill the bottle 1/3 full with vinegar
Carefully fit the balloon over the bottle opening without dropping in the baking soda
Hold up the balloon and let the baking soda drop into the vinegar
