Making a gas from a solid and a liquid

Small funnel
Baking soda
Small clean empty 20 oz plastic bottle

Using the funnel, add 3 teaspoons of baking soda to the balloon.

Fill the bottle 1/3 full with vinegar

Carefully fit the balloon over the bottle opening without dropping in the baking soda

Hold up the balloon and let the baking soda drop into the vinegar

Watch as the baking soda mixes with the vinegar to make carbon dioxide gas and blow up the balloon

What’s Happening?
The vinegar (a liquid) mixes with the baking soda (a solid) to create a chemical reaction that produces carbon dioxide gas. The gas then blows up the balloon.
